Far Cry 3

Few hours into Far Cry 3 (Tangisan Jauh 3), so here's a review of it!

STORYLINE

Decent, but it doesn't feel unique or epic. It's just about how much the main character wants to get out of deep shit.

PLOT

Shit happens and the main character runs for life then gets rescued by an awesome guy and given MAGICAL TATTOOS. Main character then takes a lesson in badassery and tries to rescue his friends off the island while still being disgusted of skinning animals.

GAMEPLAY

It's an RPG at heart, with quests, collectibles (too many) and miscellaneous stuff to do. Simplicity is a double edged sword here, some may like the fact that making potions only needs 1 ingredient but some may be complaining on simplified the system is.

Also, while they have all sorts of weapons for you to massacre pirates, you'll usually only need an assault rifle and probably a sniper. Hardly ever, do I use anything else, even a grenade.

Skills are weird and some are practically common sense or will be hardly used. Apparently, you need a skill to learn how to cook grenades which is actually common sense. In addition, there's a skill that lets you use pistols and SMGs while sliding down ziplines. The only places with ziplines in the game are radio towers and you'll never find enemies anywhere near the ziplines. Oh right, I'm a few hours in with a stockpile of skill points because the game keeps complaining I have't finished enough missions to unlock these skills. Probably the only thing I like about the skills are the magical tattoos because they look cool.

It might turn off some people but stealth is always a better strategy in this game and the game emphasizes it by how squishy the main character is and outpost liberation missions where being undetected gives a HUGE sum of bonus exp.

The game's logic is weird. If you abandon missions, all your progress during that mission may be wiped. This is annoying because you might involuntarily enter "mission areas". For instance: You activate a radio tower in the vicinity of the mission area and decide to quick travel elsewhere; you'll find that you just abandoned a mission and the radio tower reverts back to being unactivated.

It's also annoying that you can only hold a limited amount of cash. Can't this guy get a safe or a bank somewhere?

GRAPHICS

So-so. I have no idea why they used DX9 and DX11 instead of DX10 and DX11, but the details and all are decent and sufficient. Nothing much to talk or gawk about here.

AUDIO

Meh. Far Cry 3 has some BM in it and it was used rather sloppily; some dialogues have wrong grammar: "Selamat tengahari! *it's night time*". Also, who calls themselves "The Rakyat"? IMO, that's laziness. Soundtrack is either meh or unnoticeable. Sound effects are so-so. Voice acting is decent.

CONTROLS

Very wonky. Looting and skinning are awkward because they require you to stand/crouch in very specific locations for the trigger to appear. The "loot enemy" button overlaps with "loot weapons" so you'll often be frustrated that this dead guy's guns are protecting his belongings. The game also does not mention about some control features like potion hotkeys and how to select throwables (moloktov, grenade).

SUMMARY

Subpar game with flawed logic, controls, meh graphics and meh audio. Play if you have some time to kill and you're not bothered by wonky controls.
